Jay Gordon, Lead Singer of Orgy, Talks About Kicking Off First Tour in 7 Years at Rocktagon MMA’s ELITE 14 Rock-n-Rage
Plus, What He Has Been Up To Since Blue Monday.
Fans remember Jay Gordon from the band Orgy but may not realize that he owns the record label D-1 Music, that he is known as Kill-O-Watt in dubstep circles these days, or that Dead Mou5 credits him with the idea to use the mouse head on stage. Corrupt, from CTV and No Cover Cleveland, had a chance to speak with Gordon in an exclusive interview about that and Orgy’s triumphant return to the stage as the Headlining Act this Saturday at Rocktagon MMA’s ELITE Series 14 Rock-n-Rage in Northern California. Rock-n-Rages are Rocktagon MMA’s premium shows, combining mixed martial arts events with musical performances by well-known acts in select markets.
Orgy gained national recognition with their first release, Candyass, in 1998. However, the band started to change after their second album, Vapor Transmission, in 2000. The original members of Orgy had a number of side projects and the group temporarily fell by the wayside. “We took a break for a minute,” Gordon explains. “Everyone has their own way of looking at things but [the way I see it] I started the band, wrote a bunch of songs, and brought the guys in. It was cool for awhile…but [the new tour] was never going to get off the ground unless I did something.” Gordon partnered with former Deadsy members Carlton Bost and Ashburn Miller, ex-Snot drummer Jamie Miller, and bass player Nic Speck to revive the Orgy brand and get back on the road.
Corrupt is chomping at the bit to see Gordon return to the spotlight Saturday night. “There is way more to Jay Gordon than most people realize. He had a hand in pioneering the West Coast rock sound and has worked with everyone, including Linkin Park, Crazy Town, Cold Chamber, and Jonathan Davis of Korn,” says Corrupt. “The Family Values Tour with Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Ice Cube was the coolest thing going in the 90’s and Orgy was a part of that. I’m glad to see them back on the road.” Gordon agreed, “I’m excited [about the tour]. It’s been a long time coming. It’s time to get back out there and get our feet wet.”
Orgy will jump back into the national scene with both feet by headlining the Rock-n-Rage show Saturday. Corrupt believes Rocktagon MMA CEO James Jeda’s selection of Orgy for the first-ever Rock-n-Rage is a perfect fit. “Jay Gordon is an MMA star of a different type – a Mixed Music Artist,” he explains. “He is a part of everything from heavy, to rock, to rap, to dubstep…he is a total musician.” In fact, according to Gordon, that is how Orgy got their name. “Orgy is a collection of different styles of music,” he says.
Fans can expect to hear that unique Orgy blend along with some new sounds. “We will definitely be playing a lot of old stuff because that’s what people expect…[and] we will be introducing new stuff throughout the tour…the possibilities are endless,” Gordon says. Corrupt asked about Orgy’s recent collaboration with three-time Grammy winner Skrillex and the chances it might debut at the Rock-n-Rage this weekend. “It’s a good time to release it,” Gordon says. “I need to get with him but he’s a busy guy after [the Grammy’s]. It’s a fun song as it stands, though, and I will try to have it ready by Saturday.”
Gordon looks forward to kicking off Orgy’s Bad Blood Tour at the Rock-n-Rage. “I love MMA. I love UFC,” he says. “I am a big fan of Anderson Silva, Tito Ortiz, and so many other dudes. I love that sport…and I am as excited as hell. It feels so good to get back out there and crush this thing!”
